Camden Carmichael receives UNO grant for research

  • February 2026

Graduate student Camden Carmichael received funding to support his project: Sentencing ISIS: Focal concerns and sentencing in U.S. terrorism cases.

This research project intends to examine how sentencing decisions are made for ISIS-affiliated defendants in U.S. federal courts by applying the focal concerns framework to terrorism prosecutions from 2014 to 2025, which is essential to enhancing judicial legitimacy and public safety.

Funding for this project comes from the UNO Office of Research and Creative Activity Graduate Research and Creative Activity (GRACA) grant. Camden will be supported in this project by faculty mentor Dr. Austin Doctor.
